Writing Wednesday (Week 8)
Happy Writing Wednesday! For Week 8, we have some very special writing tips to help you not only survive but thrive through the last few weeks of term.
Here is our personal writing tip:
Get outside and move. That’s right, you heard me--today’s writing tip is to take a break from writing. We all need it! If you still want to exercise your writing muscles, narrate a story in your head while you explore the outdoors. Describe the world to yourself: What do you smell, hear, see, feel? Pay attention to your surroundings and see what comes to mind.
Once you’ve taken that well-needed break, check out our academic writing tip:
Having an accountability buddy can be life-changing when it comes to staying focused. Get on Zoom with a classmate or friend and challenge yourselves to continually write for 30 minutes. If you’re feeling brave, share what you’ve written with each other! If you’re in need of a buddy to help you stay accountable, try using a website like focusmate.com, reach out to other students in the Virtual Learning Center Discord Channel, or check in with Writing Center staff through an appointment or drop-in session.
As this term comes to an end, many people are experiencing profound burnout from working so hard. Taking online classes might feel like far more work than taking regular classes. In order to remedy feelings of exhaustion, it is so important to take a break, take care of yourself, and shake up your routine. Even going for a short walk or having a 15-minute writing challenge with a friend might be enough to help you feel refreshed and ready to dive back in.
We wish you all the best this week!
Sincerely,
The Writing Center
